30/05/06 - SORTED.

The job hunt began with registering at Adecco Job Agency. This involved taking some tests (got 73 words per minute on typing) and watching a health and safety video that was hilarious. It included vital information on how to lift a box and what to do if there is a bomb threat on the building - very useful stuff given the high level of terrorist activity in New Zealand.

The good news was they got me a job straight away. It wasn't an office job, just a couple of days work until an office job became available. The job was at Farmers Department Store in Kilbernie, assembling clothes stands. It was life changing. The only weird thing was getting on the bus on the first morning, because I had no idea where Kilbernie was, so I had to ask the bus driver to tell me when to get off.

The following week I registered at Kelly Services Job Agency. This also involved taking some tests (got 80 words per minute on typing) and watching a health and safety video. It included vital information on how to lift a box and what to do if there is a bomb threat on the building.

By this point I was dying for a job and a place to live. I was so sick of being in the youth hostel. Base Backpackers isn't a nice cosy hostel where everyone hangs out together, it's more like a prison, and I swore if one more guy snored in my room I'd stab him in the throat to shut him up. I spent all of my spare time playing my guitar, reading and watching TV because I didn't have any money to spend.

Later that week I got two more days work at Farmers. On the Friday Kelly Services phoned me saying that an insurance company, Cigna, wanted to have a phone interview with me about an office admin job that would last for the whole time I'm here. So a few minutes later the company phoned me up and I chatted to them for 3 minutes. Half an hour after that, Kelly Services phoned me saying that the company originally had someone else lined up for the job, who they were going to interview later - but after speaking to me for 3 minutes, they decided to give me the job!! Imagine if I had spoken to them for 10 - they probably would have made me manager! Nevermind ey.

So this was all good, I finally had a job sorted! That day at Farmers I was working with a guy called Charlie who was also temping. He's my age and originally from England, but his family migrated here a few years ago. We had a good laugh together at work, told him I was looking for a place to stay, and funnily enough he and his mates were looking for a new flatmate for their apartment! It was all coming together.

After work on Friday I went round his place and met all the guys: Ash and Tom who live there with Charlie; Nick who was the guy moving out; and a whole bunch of their friends. The place was really nice, had amazing views over Wellington's suburbs, the airport, the bay and the ocean. They also have a swimming pool!!! How sweet is that!?!

So anyway, after checking my budget I agreed to move in. I brought my stuff round on the Sunday night, and it was sooo nice to finally have my own room (after 3 months of hostels). I could actually unpack my stuff and not live out of my backpack. Plus there's a Playstation, big TV, stereo and broadband internet!

Monday morning I started my job at Cigna, which just happens to be on the 25th level of the biggest and nicest building in town. The job's dead easy, pretty similar to the work I was doing at FirstAssist.

So there you go. After a few weeks of not knowing what was going to happen; whether I'd get a job or whether I'd have to go home, it all turned around in one day! There's a lesson in life there kids. Oh, and for the icing on the cake - STA Travel agreed to refund ALL my costs of getting the work visa sorted. Sweet as bro. -
