Live At Slane Castle (2001)
Review by Karl Watson

I was at this show so I’m obviously going to have a soft spot for this DVD. If you want to know what I thought of the concert, read my review in the gig archive. As a DVD, it certainly is a great spectacle to watch. With one of the largest crowds BA has ever played in front of; the extra stage production with fire works and whatever you want to call those things during “Can’t Stop This Thing We Started”; plus the special guests, make this a lot more interesting to watch than you average BA concert.

The crowd were excellent and really enthusiastic, especially since they didn’t seem to know a few of the songs (sad, but true). They’re all clearly pissed off their heads and quite happy to bounce around to whatever ever BA played (imagine what they would have been like if he played “Kids Wanna Rock”!). It does make you wonder though how good the DVD would be if the 70,000 crowd were all BA fans instead of just there for the festival.

The show is incredibly well shot and edited together. My only minor complaints is with “It’s Only Love” being in black and white; and the all blue look is fine for the “Blues Jam”, but using it again in “The Best Of Me” seems a bit unnecessary.

Like BA’s other DVDs, the extras let it down. These extras are better than anything on the other DVDs, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement. The 3 bonus tracks should have just been in the main feature. The interviews are fun to watch. Keith barely says a word but when he does, it’s hilarious. I would have liked a lot more from the backstage and rehearsal footage, other than some shots of the band on stage where you can’t hear a word they say. The 360 degree camera thing was a nice idea, but just didn’t work.

So even though I love the show, it’s still not the perfect concert DVD that I (maybe unrealistically) hope for. Release Wembley ’96 on DVD, that’ll get 5 stars.

Key Tracks:
Summer Of '69
