Bryan Adams (1980)
Review by Steven Stanley |

Although I've only given this album one star, I
don't hate it... but I do have to be honest about it's lack of quality
in some areas. Bryan himself has often said "it's just a bunch
of glorified demos"... and I'd have to agree for the large
part. But here's the thing, there are some good songs on here!
It was an album of transition for Bryan as he tried
to merge from disco to rock, which is evident on 'Don't Say Say
It' as the choruses fill up with 70's disco backing singers. 'Try
To See It My Way', although a half decent song in premise is completely
ruined with the bouncing 70's gameshow backing track.
The album starts off well though, 'Hidin' From Love'
is a good little number, starts with intent and feels what would
come to be known as 'a Bryan Adams song'. Likewise 'Wastin' Time'
has that classic Adams vibe about it, catchy verse and a chorus
that gets your foot tapping without realising it. By far the best
rocker on the album though is 'Remember', a song that doesn't look
out of place in todays modern setlists and is the only rocker on
the album really to come through the years unscathed.
'Give Me Your Love' is the ballad highlight on this
album, and to be honest it's not bad at all. It's got plenty of
soul but just feels a little rough around the edges when the backing
singers kick in. Again though, that's just me not digging the 70's
vibe. I can imagine him doing this now on his acoustic and he'd
probably nail it.
An album thats worth a listen if you're a Bryan
fan and certainly better than a lot of other music out there...
but in the grand scheme of things when comparing it to his other
albums and to get a sense of scale it's a reluctant 1 star.
