Do To You What You Do To Me (2001)
Review by Steven Stanley |

Bryan live in Mumbai, India infront of thousands
of insane fans... nice. The trio are on fine form and the crowd
is certainly up for it, however although you can hear them singing
away it doesn't feel like anything special. Maybe it's just the
way it's mixed or whatever, it just seems very... bland. Maybe if
we didn't have such a strong bootleg culture as Bryan Adams fans
then this would have got a lot more credit, but I've heard better
shows than this. Wembley '96 for example just sounds bloody epic
from start to finish. When you hear Bryan yell down the microphone
you can hear it reverberate around the Wembley bowl and the constant
drone of the crowd... you can feel how big it is. The sound has
a certain quality and texture to it this just doesn't... too much
high end. Listen to the 'Live In South Africa' disc from '99 and
the audience atmosphere and band is captured perfectly.
Maybe the full show would have been better... although
we are treated with a rare pro-recording of 'Do To You' in trio
format, that's about it to be honest. Of the 16 tracks on there only
6 or 7 are rockers and the middle of the disc is filled with acoustic
or low key tracks we have heard far too often. For the casual fan
this is a great buy as it gives you an incite into how good Bryan
is live. However, as this was an Indian only release in 2001 the
originals of these are like rocking horse shit to get hold of and
are quite a collectors item... so I doubt any casual fans will pick
this up anyway.
Another annoying thing about this CD is that the
best song in the set for me (and the opening song of the gig) is
missing. 'Back To You' isn't included on this disc...lord only knows
why. How can you not put the first track on? Insane. I can understand
why this CD was released though. It was India only, and it was quite
a big deal for them for Bryan to be touring there... so hats off
to them for putting a CD out.
Don't get me wrong this is a good CD, it's just
we are all spoiled with high quality bootlegs that give you shows
far superior in setlists. Granted this is a pro-recording, but as
I've already mentioned it feels kind of flat when you listen to
it. Originally I gave this 2 stars, but in fairness thats maybe
a bit harsh... it just creeps to 3 because of the feel good factor
it has. If you want a better taste of what Bryan was like in this
period checkout the Slane 2000 show.
