Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron (2002)
Review by Steven Stanley |

Not your run of the mill Bryan Adams album, a full
soundtrack CD featuring BA songs written specifically for the film
'Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron' featuring also some of the score
from the film. The vast majority of the songs featured on the album
were included in the film, with the aim to give the horse a voice
through Bryan's music. It worked really well, and although it was
essentially only a 2D childrens animation film, it was a watchable
little film.
Produced by film giants 'Dreamworks' Bryan found
himself collaborating with score legend Hans Zimmer and the songs
they produced were nothing short of genious. 'Here I Am' was a well
deserved #5 hit here in the UK and a great summer song, it's an
uplifting tune and features a brilliant solo by Bryan in the middle.
Performed live around the same time it gained added beef with Bryan
on the bass and packed a punch. Too bad it dropped out of the live
set.
Of course as you would expect from Hans Zimmer with
it being a soundtrack and all, the whole thing feels very theatrical
and epic. 'Sound The Bugle' gets the hairs on the back of your neck
on edge when the vocals really kick in during the snow scene from
the film. Bonus track 'Where Do I Go From Here', also extremely
heartfelt and soulful, as does 'Brothers Under the Sun'. Add to
that a duet with Sarah McLachlan and this disc has something for
everyone.
The masterpiece on this album though is 'I Will
Always Return', in my opinion his greatest ever ballad. Amazing
to think he's never performed it live. Performed with so much heart
and passion, if this doesn't get your juices flowing nothing will.
There are so many variations in performances on this album (all
of them brilliant) that it really does showcase Bryan's vocals extremely
well. I hope he does another full soundtrack one day because this
was a stroke of genious.
