Unplugged (1997)
Review by Steven Stanley

After huge success with the '18 Til I Die' album, Bryan accepts MTV's request (at the 4th time of asking) to do an 'Unplugged' record. 3 new songs were included on this album and lead single 'Back To You' is certainly the best song on the album... it's questionable whether a better single has been released since - probably not. It's instant catchy lyrics and melody leave you hooked - absolutely brilliant. 'When You Love Someone' is a high quality ballad and I will pay it the dues it deserves - its good, although a bit too Celine Dion for my liking. 'A Little Love' is another decent tune... but I'm not a fan of accordians. If you want to hear amazing ballads on here you have to hark back to the older stuff... 'Heaven' is simply beautiful as is 'I'll Always Be Right There'.

So, the re-working of the old classics... all in all fantastic! 'Summer Of '69' sounds great stripped down before coming to a rocking crescendo and 'The Only Thing' sounding just as good as ever. '18 Til I Die' however, completely bombed. It's performed with a violin arrangement and completely goes against everything the song is about. This one inclusion on the album brings it down a star all by itself.

Highlight on the album is probably the 'Blues Jam' which fuses previous b-side 'If Ya Wanna Be Bad, Ya Gotta Be Good' and 'Let's Make A Night To Remember' together into a dirty blues outing that is pure class. A similar thing was done with 'Can't Stop This Thing We Started' and 'It Ain't A Party... If Ya Can't Come 'Round'... but it only made single b-sides and not the album... a shame.

All in all it's a good album with some amazing songs, but some stuff was a little too experimental for my liking.

Key Tracks:
Back To You
Blues Jam
