06/09/92 - DESERT PARK, OSOYOOS During
the summer of '92, Adams launched what may have been an unprecedented Canadian
tour. Calling it Waking Up the Nation, Adams recruited a stack of hit-making opening
acts, including seventies rocker Steve Miller, and toured outdoor venues across
the country. Each concert could hold anywhere from 30,000 to 60,000 people. These
were staggering audiences for a homegrown star. I
caught him that summer in Osoyoos, B.C. Adams basically put on the same show that
he did a decade earlier, albeit with plenty of new material. Put simply, he just
rocked. Despite the often dopey lyrics, Adams's songs are undeniably catchy and
crafted. Even after six hours of music, the Osoyoos crowd went mental for the
blond singer in the jeans, boots and flannel shirt. Adams's
drawing power is such that you could put a concert in the middle of nowhere and
people would come for hundreds of kilometres to see him. That's star power. At
the time Osoyoos was a town of about 3,000, and is located at the southern most
tip of the Okanagan Valley. A four and a half hour drive from Vancouver, 30,000
people swelled the town's population by 10-fold on that balmy summer night. | | |
