17/09/92 - KING EDDY HOTEL, CALGARY
Ottawa bluesman Tony D had a night to remember recently
- as he shared the stage with superstar Bryan Adams in Calgary.
Our boy Tony -- and his Cool band -- are on a Western swing, and
last weekend were in the midst of converting the crowd at Calgary's
King Eddy Hotel to their special brand of the blues.
The city was also the scene of a contest payback
by Adams and his band -- he was scheduled to play for a winner and
50 of her friends and because of the noise factor opted to use the
King Eddy instead of the winner's backyard (they didn't want to
wake the neighbours).
During the show -- which lasted some two hours,
Adams did a few originals, plus a lot of cover tunes (including
a version of, Tom Cochrane's Life Is A Highway). Adams then asked
the Ottawa band to climb on stage and join him for a version of
Roadhouse Blues.
Tony D indicated it was an interesting night all
round. "The cool thing was he did over two hours and he was
really laid back and real down to earth it." Tony recalls from
Saskatoon.
What about Adams as a band member? "I'll be
honest, he's an adequate rhythm guitarist, but he doesn't pretend
to be a great musician -- it's his voice that does the talking.
Apparently, it was a fun time for everyone. "He
wasn't worried about it at all, he knew we could play and the way
he smiled at everybody we knew he was into it."
Tony was impressed with all the cover tunes Adams
did. "Whole Lotta Love, American Woman, Wild Thing -- the thing
about Adams is he knows ALL the hits, no wonder he's so big,"
Tony D and his Cool Band return to Ottawa soon -- with upcoming
gigs at Tucson Road House and the Rainbow Bistro
