05/08/94 - OLYMPIC STADIUM, STOCKHOLM

Review by Martin:
This was my first ever BA-concert. I was 11 years old back then and it was of course a big big deal. The first time only come once as they say. I read in the papers that BA was coming to Stockholm and quickly asked my parents if they'd allow me to go. To my surprise they both said "yes" and so it was on. My dad took me there and we arranged to meet outside after the show. The venue was the old Olympic Stadium where usually all the big rock and roll gigs in this town take place.

Just before we were all set and ready to go my dad told me that he heard it was 22,000 tickets sold for the show. That really got me going. Of course I had been in big crowds before at footballmatches and hockeygames but never that big.. my heart was pumping now!

I had really no idea what to expect or what i was going to witness, but i sure had a gut feeling it was gonna be good! Opening acts were The Pretenders and australian rocker Jimmy Barnes. Pretenders were pretty well-known to me as their song 'I'll Stand By You' (pretty nice song!) were played alot on the radio that summer. Jimmy Barnes well..to me it was just a name like any name hehe (sorry if any Jimmy Barnes fans reads this!)

Before the gig outside the stadium the atmosphere was fantastic. My dad bought some earplugs for me. Cute little yellow ones. I wasn't really sure if i wanted them, but i didn't argue.

Just as it was time to start queing I got really nervous and unsure about this whole situation which was so new to me (when i was younger i wasn't really used to and comfortable being in a massive crowd of people and certainly not all by myself but that's another story really)

I got in anyway and bought the So Far So Good tour programme and a t shirt. About 18.10 Jimmy Barnes came on played for about 30-35 mins or so and then left. Not a performance to remember. Pretenders came on one hour later and were really good. Chrisse Hynde is a good singer and all their hits really got the crowd going.

And then the big moment. 20.35. Lights out and BA came on to the wild cheers of the Stockholm crowd. I have a big picture from the gig on my wall showing BA with that carrott hairstyle. Still looks pretty cool on him nine years later. He opened with 'House Arrest' and then launched into a standard set for that tour. The acoustic of the Olympic Stadium has always been very enjoyable but in the beginning i wasn't certain that the soundmen had it right. For the first four our five songs BA sounded really childish.. but that probably was just me not being used to hear him live! 'Kids Wanna Rock', 'All I Want Is You' followed and after that he made his first talking break. We cheered him on and welcomed him to Stockholm. BA was in a really good mood that night and talked alot with the crowd.

As the band was about to start playing 'This Time' i threw my earplugs away.. no need for that shite! i could bare the sound anyway! After a really touching 'Please Forgive Me' (back then he played the whole fullband version!) BA mentioned that just before he went on he heard it was about 28,000 people at the show. He then said something like " so c'mon, put your hands in the air!" and they launched into a wild version of "Touch The Hand" with everybody jumping up and down. Cool piece.

'Thought I'd Died And Gone To Heaven' was probably the best song of the evening. It was played halfunplugged. Really, really beautiful. BA also pulled up a screamer (Jonas) from the crowd. 'Hey you, big mouth'. Jonas sang 'Heaven' Didn't sound very good but it was a great laugh.

The B-stage took me completly by surprise. It took me a while to understand what was going on hehe. It was like.. suddenly the band was closer! Really awesome idea.

Back on the mainstage he ended the night with '69' and 'All For Love'

A fantastic first BA-show! I'm glad I went. So many impressions so many feelings it was all great. I met my father outside and he asked me of course how the show was. i was so stunned by the performance and everything I could'nt find the words when trying to explain hehe. But like BA says in the song. Do I Have To Say The Words? :-)

The headline next morning in the newspaper was "28,000 fell for Bryan" We sure did. We fell under his spell.
