22/06/97 - PHILLIPSHALLE, DUSSELDORF

Review by Maria Heutz:
Düsseldorf was the first concert in my life. My interest for Bryan’s live music was so small that I almost had missed also this one. You must know I’m a big football fan and I preferred to go to football matches with my favourite football player Jürgen Klinsmann. Over and above that I thought I’m too old to go to concerts.
I was away in Düsseldorf and it was pure chance that I noticed the posters with the announcement of Bryan’s playing in the Philipshalle. I bought a ticket and on the gig day I drove towards Düsseldorf. I was more than nervous for my first BA experience. Neither my husband nor my children have this enthusiasm for BA’s music. So I had to go alone. I was there very early with around 30 fans still waiting. It was nice and sunny weather and there were people looking for tickets. So it must have been a sold out gig. I was absolutely clueless, unsuspecting and inexperienced and didn’t know where to go when the doors opened. These were the reasons why I’ve found my place rather close to the stage but in front of Keith’s microphone.
The concert started without a supporter band, with 20 minutes delay and on the b-stage. There Bryan performed Straight from the heart and Depend on me. The woman next to me spoke to her mother because she didn’t know both these songs. On the main stage Bryan began with The only thing that looks good on me is you followed by Do to you and other songs of the 18 til I die album.
Let’s make a night to remember shouldn’t be missed cause this was the tour’s motto. The lines of I think about you Bryan totally mixed up. When he played (I wanna be) Your underwear on the site there were two big inflatable plastic dolls in bikinis. So later in the newspaper article about this concert he was called a fetishist of underwear. Completely new for me was his song Hey Elvis which I hadn’t heart before but loved at the first touch.
He also joked with the audience when he formed his own band by bringing up some guys to play bass, guitar, drums and percussion and of course a singer. The singer was totally crap singing Thought I’d died and gone to heaven and Bryan called the band “Scheiße” This means in English “Shit”.
I haven’t seen much of Bryan. He only once changed his place with Keith. He wore blue jeans and a green tight t-shirt. He is so thin. Mostly I watched Keith and his fans who flirted a lot with him. One girl through her bra on stage and Keith put him on his mic’s stand. I noticed that he is very nice to his fans and that he has beautiful brown eyes.
The concert lasted about two hours and all in all I loved it very much. I was surprised how different a concert is compared with an album or a song played in the radio. There are so many little things that change live, also the intros are different. So I swore to go to further BA shows soon. But I didn’t know that my next BA experience should take place more than two years later.
