23/08/97 - GREAT WOODS CENTER, BOSTON, MASS

Review by Carl:
I attended the 8/23/97 Bryan Adams concert in Mansfield, MA at Great Woods. It was a great concert, as anyone who's ever seen Bryan live would know. First off, he sang the following songs: The only thing that looks good on me is you, Do to you, Let's Make a Night to Remember, 18 til I die, This Time, Can't Stop This Thing We've Started, Everything I do (I do it for you), Touch the Hand, Please forgive me, I wanna be (your underwear), We're gonna win, It ain't a party (if you can't come 'round), Have you ever really loved a woman?, I'll always be right there, Hey Elvis, It's only love, Cuts like a Knife, Kids Wanna Rock, Heaven, Run to You, Summer of 69, Somebody, and one other cover. I had pretty good seats, roughly in the middle of the pavilion. The concert was not sold out, in fact, there were many empty seats and only about a hundred or so people on the lawn. This was very surprising to me. If this had been a few years ago, like when I saw him in Boston, it would have been sold out. I guess his popularity isn't that big right now, as in the rest of the World. This latest album is a really good one, but I guess it doesn't fit in with the rest of the junk on the radio these days. Anyway, here are some highlights of the show: 1) Bryan opened with "The only thing that looks good..." He had a few hundred fans on a platform the entire night, right on the stage. During "Hey Elvis", Bryan talked awhile about Elvis sightings and looked around the crowd for Elvis. The spotlight found a guy dressed as Elvis and everyone went crazy (part of the show). Bryan ended "Please forgive me" before the song was over. It just kind of ended suddenly. I don't know if he forgot the words or a band member goofed, oh well. During "I wanna be your underwear", they had 2 huge balloons of 2 people in underwear. The balloons were black and the underwear lit up in bright colors. Bryan stopped during the concert and said "This guy in the front is driving me &$^# crazy. He keeps yelling 69." Bryan got the guy to come up on stage and asked "What do you mean by 69?" The guy replied, "I like the song." Bryan then told the guy he could sing it. Bryan then chose people out of the audience to play all the instruments and this group formed out of audience members played "Summer of 69." They did a good job for a while, largely with the help of the audience singing along. The first song of the encore Bryan played "Summer of 69" himself. Highlights of the show for me were "18 til I die" and "Cuts like a knife". Overall, I still liked the show I saw at Boston Garden better, but I really think that has a lot to do with the atmosphere and history of that building. I'm not sure any show could compare. That's not to say this wasn't an excellent concert, because it was, as is any Bryan Adams concert. There was no opening act and Bryan and the band played for 2 1/2 hours. I recently joined his fan club, but too late to take advantage of the reserved front seats for fan club members. Someone I know in the fan club got 3rd row seats. Bryan seems to treat his fans well, he talked to people throughout the show and said he would be back in Boston next year maybe. He is leaving to record a new album.

The first time that I saw Bryan in concert was in May of 1994 at the Boston Garden in Boston, MA. It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. He performed for 3 hours straight, even though he had a cold. I was in the balcony seats and you could feel the whole Garden actually moving.
