28/07/02 - WARWICK CASTLE Review by Steven Stanley:
Well it's nearly 2am and I've just got back from Warwick...the last UK BA gig of the year probably. I've not had a bad innings I guess of 8 gigs in 4 months (6 in a week back in March!). When we got outa the car there the temperature said it was 33 degrees and it was probably hotter than that...words cannot describe how hot it was (the picture above was taken the day of the gig...look how nice it was!)

I got to the front of a queue anyway and queued for a few hours while listening to the soundcheck which good be heard (and seen I might add!!!) very very well. 'Get Back' and especially 'Might Sweet Lord' were highlights for me and seeing as the gig setlist was pretty standard...indeed highlights of the day!

Our gate wasn't opened in time with the other anyway and was opened last. We had a right go at the security for this the tossers. We were stood there for like 5 minutes with people running past us. As soon as it was opened I ran straight to the front and pushed my way to the barrier...people didn't know what I was doing but hey I had been there longer than them so I didn't care! 8 gigs 8 front rows...nice :)

During the heat anyway a support act called Vega 4 came on who were a lot better than when I saw them at Leeds a week ago. During the last song the lead singer got in the crowd and started walking around in it....then went for a run up and down the stage then across the crowd...and get this...climbed unaided to the very top of the goddam stage!

BA soon came on anyway with 'Here I Am'. It's good lyrical opener I think but it doesn't get the crowd going well enough in my opinion like 'Back To You' did to start off in March. Still good though.

From then on BA ploughed through the same old setlist as per usual. He got to 'When You're Gone' and picked Mandy from Milton Keynes who I have seen before in the queue at Wembley, Brighton etc. It was good to see a proper fan onstage. Afterwards she went and hugged all 4 band members and BA said 'what about the roadies?!' She said she worked in a place that sold screws! BA asked 'how much for a screw?!'. 'Anyone wanting a screw go see Mandy in Milton Keynes!' etc etc which was quite funny.

He also mentioned that the gig was being recorded for BBC Radio 2 so lookout for that this week or next (it wasn't broadcast live so you are ok as yet don't panic!).

As with Leeds though the gap between the stage and crowd was massive...infact twice as big as Leeds...far better in the Arenas where if you are front row you get far more interaction with the band. At least during 69 Keith jumped down to the crowd and came up to us with his guitar shouting 'c'mon!!!!!!'. Look at the picture below!!

The b-stage was good and for me it was the first time I have heard him do 'A Little Less Conversation' and it was greeted with a huge reception because of it's current chart status etc. BA's version was better though. You could also see all the b-stage action very well on the big video screens either side of the stage and all the people around BA and Keith...amazing antics! Another cool song to hear after 'She's Only Happy' was 'The Twist'...very good!

As they were running back to the main stage the music to 'Don't Give Up' started playing and I thought they were going to do that but they didn't. It was just Gary Bright warming up the crowd I guess because he didn't go on the b-stage! After 'Cloud #9' and 'Run To You' that was it...only 2 songs after coming off the b-stage. You would have thought he would have done 'Kids Wanna Rock' or something to end on...well thats what I was hoping for anyway! 'Run To You' did the end justice for once anyway instead of 'The Best Of Me'.

All in all a decent gig and decent looking venue...shame about the security because they were awful! Only £3 to park your car as well unlike the £18 I suffered in Leeds!
