04/01/03 - KIRSTENBOSCH GARDENS, CAPE TOWN

Review by Val Deuchar:
Saturday 4 Jan 03

Wow - can it be said that this was better than the 1st and 2nd shows? Can't believe he can outdo himself one day after the other.

Anyway - back to the queue. Same place, main entrance gate. My niece, Heidi, accompanied me this time. Again got there about 14h15 and about 20/25 people from front. Usual chatting with everyone - when people on all three evenings discovered I was attending all three shows - they said "wow - you must be a REAL Bryan Adams fan". When they find out how much it is costing me (together with the t-shirt purchase and banner preparation) quite a few thought I was rich - so perhaps I was being "too extravagant" as certain persons who shall remain nameless have suggested to me. Okay - but I don't care - in unlikely event of Bryan visiting again - it will be in say 4 years - (but maybe less?) plenty time to put a special piggy bank together and save up the loose coins. In any event, I have made appropriate "forfeits" both in the past and will forfeit in the future to justify my attending all of the Cape Town shows.

At about 17h00 I noticed (and no-one else did as there were lots of vehicles around - I just kept quiet as I did not want to create a riot) - this white stretch limo (with personalised no. plates & tinted windows) quietly pull up - it stopped briefly in front of us and slowly drove away - the first evening B said on stage that he would get to Kirstenbosch about 17h00. Now I am thinking to myself - was that Bryan checking out the queues? Somehow I don't see B in a stretch limo but maybe it was? I have met someone subsequently who said he attended the first night in Cape Town and when running to get the best position, saw Bryan leaving in a black Mercedes Benz. So .. who knows.

We were let in earlier than 18h30 this time - so were stopped at a barrier closer to the stage. But I discovered that it was a decision taken by a security guard, manning that barrier, filled with his own self importance. Because when he finally agreed to let us run up (I was 3rd in this line after having overtaken people running uphill just before this barrier) THERE WERE PEOPLE ALREADY SITTING THERE that had entered from the other gates. I was ready to kill that security guard - but naturally could not forfeit my position by turning back and committing the deed! I however still managed to get up front right of stage (where Bryan consistently selected the WYG girl) this time - happy as I wanted a different perspective. If I ever bump into that security guard prick again I will give him a slap like that woman did to that pompous Scot on the first night!

Spent part of the next 1.5 hours chatting to "my" security guards (note - not chatting up!) - the nice ones controlling the stage. The audience all 3 nights were pretty middle of the road types - varying ages with kids (9 years old), teenagers, twenties, thirties etc. Big middle aged contingent (hello Val) but next to me on my left the final night was a woman up front against the stage who certainly must have been approaching 70. What a blast - and she got down and boogied!

KFM 94.5 radio dj gave the intro as the first night - waited half an hour after that before the guys again very casually walked on stage.

Keith again was having a ball and dancing around like mad. Bryan mentioned what a wonderful summer holiday they were having and said "thank you, South Africa". I think he fancies us! You are welcome back anytime to spend a summer break, Bryan! Also, throw in some bonus concerts again to express your appreciation!

At the two previous shows I sometimes struggled to hear what Bryan was saying when he decided to have one of his chats due to the crowd screaming. Tonight two teenage girls started screaming from about 19h45 an entire half an hour before Bryan was to come on - right behind me into my ear. I turned round and asked them as nicely as possible to cease screaming when Bryan talks as everyone (but particularly me!) would like to hear what he has to say - I said obviously you can scream and cavort as much as you want during the songs (the sound system subsequently drowned them out anyway) - they looked astounded but agreed - perhaps I looked & sounded like their 3rd grade dragon teacher from a few years back!

WYG. Bryan took an age to decide on who would join him - he even asked Keith to assist and Keith chose someone way back to the left - Bryan ultimately chose not to heed his advice and selected a girl middle centre. Well, this was the sexiest one of the 3 evenings - typical clothing as I explained before - when he asked her what she does she
said she was still at school. So I reckon she was 16 or 17 - going on 25! An Afrikaans lass because when Bryan asked her if she knew the words to the song she answered "a bietjie" (which is Afrikaans for "a little"). He misunderstood and thought her name was Vicki! Anyway he asked her if she was alone and she said no, she was with her "new" boyfriend. Bryan asked where is your boyfriend? After she indicated, Bryan pointed to him, lights centred on him and Bryan said (with his arms around "Vicki") "If you don’t get it tonight man, you are never going to get it". Or words to that effect. Oooh, I reckon some older folk in the audience may have found that just a little bit over the top Bryan when the lady on stage with you was not yet even an adult - just a mere kid - never mind what they actually do get up to - don’t go and encourage/endorse it in front of all those people. Anyway - I am not too bothered with it - but I know some others maybe - especially her Mom or Dad. The audience laughed like crazy. As the song got under way - we realised this time Bryan had chosen the right girl - she was brilliant. Very soon Bryan flung the word sheet out of her hand as she knew the words and she was just flashing the sheet around interfering with his playing. Even Bryan acknowledged to her and the crowd after the song that she definitely was the best for the 3 nights - and she merely enjoyed herself - did the normal bum to bum thing (nothing else!) and hugged and kissed Bryan - exactly what I would have done! She did not go to a certain extreme as Lauren did on the first night.

The centre right side of stage was conveniently placed for me to touch Bryan's leg - which I duly did - felt like a stupid teenybopper but everyone was doing it - even the 70 year old lady - all in good clean fun and Bryan seemed totally oblivious. Security left us alone.

Also the spot I had tonight was extremely well placed to view his butt! Although you are still sexy Bryan - too thin - get some weight on to fill those jeans. I can't talk - everyone complaining on how thin I am - have lost 9kgs since August and before then I was not even regarded as overweight, never mind fat! No wonder I was able to make it right up front every night beating everyone in sight! I was like a fairy flying in the night!

Someone was phoning a friend on their mobile phone and I don’t think they handed it to Bryan with the request for him to take it - Bryan simply helped himself to the phone and spoke into it - heard nothing of course as it was right in the middle of a song.

The first encore bow Bryan again fooling around - this time leaning back with the guys having to hold him to prevent him from falling - that's how I discovered his brand of underwear. On this Saturday night his preference was for Calvin Klein. No, it wasn't the jeans - it was the underwear!

Keith appeared to recognise me - at the 2nd show - and then at the third show - he acknowledged me by mouthing "how are you"? I responded appropriately - with decorum! What a nice guy. But I suppose it was inevitable to remember me seeing I was up there 3x and the stage was small and narrow. Not too many faces along its length, therefore. The first night I gave a thumbs up to Mickey and he responded with a big grin.

Bryan had to cut short his final show by 3 songs as by the time he was singing "Cloud # 9", I could tell his voice was finished (the audience did not seem to realise it but I did as I had been to the two previous shows). So he did not sing Straight from the Heart, Run To You and The Best of Me. He pointed to his throat to the crew at the back after completing "Cloud 9".

He did however take peoples hands in the front and signed some cd covers and books from the front of stage before finally leaving the stage. The first night he signed someone's t shirt.

Thank heavens I went for that third and final concert ticket. It was worth it all 3 nights of having a party - it took me two days to recover from the shows - was really bushed by Saturday night when I got home that although I really believed I was "awake walking", I was walking into door frames - so I was "awake but sleep walking".

It now seems unreal that I was at those three shows just a few weeks ago - we really did not expect another BA visit after his May 99 concerts. Am only now feeling as though I am no longer on an emotional rollercoaster - still feel on a high though - no doubt after a month, 3 months it will settle down?
