FASHION ROCKS - THE INSIDE STORY FASHION ROCKS saw
17 designers show their autumn/winter 2003 collections, as 17 handpicked
artists performed for them.
Presenter Elizabeth Hurley made 19 costume changes
in total - with new hair and make-up each time
When she disappeared for her first transformation,
co-presenter Denis Leary showed "the men what they really wanted
to see": a huge image of Hurley's face superimposed onto the
body of a naked woman, which appeared on a 100ft screen behind him
Later, sneaking into the wings in a bid to lure
semi-clad models on stage, Leary bumped into Minnie Driver and tried
to bribe her into stripping for the audience. "You know what,"
retorted the quick-witted actress, "you're not carrying enough
cash
"
Bored of running back and forth between changes,
the pair of presenters finally reemerged on stage on scooters
Each artist performed in the middle of a giant circular
stage, with the models walking in rings around them. Star turn Beyoncé
made a big impression on Prince Charles, who commented that she
was "looking very beautiful"
Naturally, when it came to Robbie's turn, the cheeky
singer (wearing a black Versace suit and silver trainers) couldn't
resist chatting up the models who encircled him, sending the girls
and the audience into fits of laughter
His performance won over Donatella Versace, who
admitted "I adore him". She also had high praise for Camilla
Parker Bowles: "She's a great woman and such fun"
In a conversation with Julien Macdonald, Camilla
revealed that she was keen to cultivate more of a "rock star
image". "I told her she could get a pair of my tights
for £10.99 at Debenhams," the designer said later, "and
she's going to
"
Performing for Burberry, Jay Kay wore a pale blue
house check coat. He claimed he chose to go with a British label,
because it "went with the Aston Martin"
Performing for Calvin Klein, Canadian rocker Bryan
Adams quipped: "It's a lovely charity and I'll get free underpants
for life"...
The multi-talented Milla Jovovich proved herself
as worthy of the title "singer" as "actress"
and "model", joining her band, Plastic Has Memory, on
stage for Prada
In the string of models paraded out during Duran
Duran's set for Donna Karan, Simon Le Bon's wife Yasmin took up
the rear. At the end of his song, Simon called her over and the
couple kissed
Jade Jagger appeared in a Dior mini-dress, carrying
a Philip Treacy bag printed with photos of her father Mick - apparently
it was a gift from the Rolling Stone....
Wildest dress sense awards went to Bjork, who arrived
in a mask of silver sequins with a fuzzball hairdo to accessorise
her Alexander McQueen dress, and Grace Jones, in a Pharoah-style
headdress by Philip Treacy...
When all was shown and sung, Fashion Rocks had definitely
been a night of stars. With guests happy to pay £1,000 for
tickets, the show is thought to have raised a staggering £750,000
in total for the Prince's Trust...
Catch the whole event on T4 on Saturday or see highlights
on Channel 4 at 10pm on Sunday night.
