08/08/04 - FLEET CENTER, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS

Review by Brian Beckwith
Bryan and the band played the Boston area for the first time since his show in Lowell in 2001, and judging by the crowd reaction, his loyal fan base here still loves him. The setllist was very similar to Jones Beach, but the crowd at this show was much more enthusiastic and much more appreciative, even at a smaller venue. It was his first time at the FleetBoston Pavilion, and right from the opening chords of "There Will Never Be Another Tonight," the crowd was on its feet, dancing in the aisles and pumping their fists.

Bryan and the band showed nonstop energy right from the beginning and looked like they were having a blast. They put their heart and soul into every show, even though they have been doing some of the same songs for 20 years or more. The new single "Open Road" was once again very well-received, and Bryan told everyone to go and download it from his website.

For "When You're Gone," Bryan brought up a girl named Diana from Michigan. The crowd booed when she said where she was from, but she did say "Go Sox," so that made up for it a bit, plus the fact that she is doing her gaduate studies at a local school. I guess they wanted a hometown girl up there, but Diana won the crowd over when she did a fantastic job on the song. Bryan was a bit surprised that she said she was at the show by herself, but she said there were some nice people near her, so Bryan gave them all some t-shirts.

Bryan really played to the crowd during "Cuts Like a Knife," as he jokingly poked fun as they did the "na-na-na's." A more upbeat and peppy version of "heaven" was another crowd singalong, beofre bryan closed the main set with rockers "Somebody," and "The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me is You."

BA and the boys came back for more, and at one point, Bryan told the crowd, "We haven't had a reception like this in Boston since the '80's." He was very gracious as he went through the crowd at the front of the stage during "The Best of Me," slapping hands and just having a good time. After Bryan ended the show with "Straight From the Heart" and "Depend On Me," the crowd stil wanted more, and Bryan was just in awe at the love the crowd was giving him. He once again thanked the crowd very sincerely, but that was the end of the night, and what a great night it was!
