21/09/04 - SPORTSPALAIS, ANTWERP

Review by Wouter Nuijten:
We drove with two cars to Antwerp. It is less than a half an hour drive from our homes. When we arrived at the Sportpaleis we left chaos behind us. We went a junction too far en we had to make a turn (which wasn't possible at that point.) At the Sportpaleis we putted the cars on the footpath infront of it. We could go queing cause at about 18.30 the doors to the hall went open en we were inside very soon. At 19.00 the doors went open. We were in top of the venue and were the first there so we picked the best spot. We would have liked to go front-row but that wasn't possible, we had the 'wrong tickets'. It would have been beter to order the tickets later. Though we now had a perfect place for: a bootleg, photo's etc!!!

At 20.15 the supportact started: Silverene. This stood on their website: 'Silverene supportact for Bryan Adams 21-09. The message: Yeah, we're asked to support 'Mister Bryan Fucking Adams'. Who do they think they are? The `dickheads` themselves came onstage. It was just noise. 'You Can Go Your Own Way' , a Fleetwood Mac cover was the only thing which sounded reasonably good. Then it was over, what a relief. The lightman teased us by turning the light off everytime someone came onstage. Then suddenly it stayed dark and there he was: 'Bryan “Mister Bad” Adams' with the band.

The concert itself: Bryan waved and they started with `Room Service` as we expected. Great opener, I started making pictures and movies. The second was `Open Road`, another new song. Bryan played the harmonica and wow, that was brilliant. There was just silence for a few seconds when K-Man started `18 Til I Die`. Wow, three great show-openers. Bryan let us scream the `18 Til I Die` which was cool. After this superb entrance Bryan had a big grimace on his face :D. `Let’s Make a Night to Remember` was played and it sounded great with the 5 piece band. Norm Fischer started the next song `Can’t Stop This Thing We Started` and well: Bryan couldn't stop it easily. He almost needed someone to stop him... BA asked us if he had been here before, he started to remember something. He wanted to play a `Waking Up the Neighbours` song. It was `House Arrest` which really kicked the night off! Bryan went backstage, so did Keith so they went changing guitars. Adams on Western and Scott had a Sunburst Strat, Good! They played `Back to You` , this one was better than at Lux, Gary did a great job. Our fear became truth, we heard the intro of our favourite BA-song. An acoustic and again no electric `Summer of ’69` which is still brilliant and really great. The Summer of 2004 is over, but ’69 still ROCKS !!! I was rocking when I was filming as you can see (I had to change my memorycard and batteries ;-) but I did that very, very fast ). The audience went crazy when they got back to `Waking Up the Neighbours` for `(Everything I Do) I Do It For You`. You could see the Badman enjoyed himself, the others too. Keith did a great job, Mickey was great as always. The background-man Norman and Gary showed their skills. Norman came with his bass-guitar between Bryan and Keith singing his parts. Bryan, now back on Stratocaster told us he started to remember this place. Oh yeah! It `Cuts Like a Knife`! Wow, again a great old rocker. The gap was filled by the Antwerp audience by singing ‘Nananana’ in which Bryan supported us. After this song Bryan said: `I would like to invite someone on stage to come and sing with me on this next song.` So it was WYG time! For `When You’re Gone` Bryan again needed to pick a girl. After a long time he finally chose someone. Bryan asked her name and she said: `Maresse` or somethin' like that at which Bryan answered: `My Ass!` which was very funny. The student for kindergarten-teacher from Antwerp needed the lyrics. She did a good job but the most funny thing was the part during Keiths solo. Bryan (with guitar) always dances with the WYG-girl, but to but. The lady did not really understand what the BADman wanted to do and she decided to ride BA's but :D !!!. It was really hilaric to see, you could see the other band-members thinkin' huh?!? Normally the WYG-girls are very shy but this one was really not. Bryan: `Come on she did a really good job, I can never do that.` And then: `Are you still with me?` and started `Not Romeo, Not Juliet` with those great lyrics to shout with him. `It has to be perfect but it never is!` The band was a pleasure to listen to, they really did a good job. Bryan didn't play the up-tempo `Heaven` but Keiths solo's made that up for us. Then the band decided to let us demolish the Sportpaleis. 1,2 and 1,2,3,4 was the beginning of 'Somebody'. I need Somebody! the crowd went crazy, Hey what about YOU! A very very good `Reckless` song. They went on, Mickey immediately started with the drum-intro of `The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You`. Especially us and Bryan shouting 'You!' was really cool. The band left but came back very fast cause the Sportpaleis wasn't broken down enough :D. You won't break things down with `Cloud #9` the only song I didn't really like that night. Come on BA, Rock the Summer of ’69 and play `I’m Ready` unplugged. Not a single BA-song is 'bad ;-)' but 'Cloud #9' can be thrown out of the setlist (in my opinion). Bryan made it up for me with a great `Run to You` (as always). The new stage setup featured great light especially during this song. A pink blow-up pig lied on stage, Bryan said: `Now I know that I’m really welcome here, cause someone gave me a `Good Luck`-pig. I’ve never had one before so wherever you are: Thank you!` :D. He said to the band `Steady` and after that: `Ok, You Got It`. The sign for the band to end this part with `The Best of Me` at which Bryan again decided to go frontrow. Not a great song though seeing BA going frontrow is really cool. Bryan asked an applause for the band and they deserved that! Bryan came back again, with his acoustic Western guitar. He thanked us first: `I just want to thank you again cause every time I come to Belgium it’s always an amazing reception. I don’t know what it is but once again, Thank You!` Bryan started with met `Flying` which must be a `Stripped` song. `Straight From the Heart` was beautiful as well. Bryan said before the song: `So Here I Am, quite a few years later, I can tell you how many but uh... you all know.` Especially acoustic this song sounded very good. Bryan’s last song was `Depend On Me` (and it has never been played after this gig. It's a shame!) A very great and beautiful song (in this version), also nice to sing along :D.

At the end of the night I felt great, the men really had done well. Gary was excellent, Norman too, they co-operated to the show better than they did in Luxembourg. Keith and Mickey are always great and always up for fun. Though Keith was extremely good. Bryan is always good, it was nice to see the men enjoying themselves. `It was a Night to Remember`.
