19/11/04 - CHILDREN IN
NEED GIG, GUILDHALL GREEN, LLWYN ISAF, WREXHAM Review
by Steven Stanley So
soon after following Bryan right around the UK on his recent UK Tour, a show like
this was a big surprise to say the least! Anyway somehow we got tickets (you don't
wanna know how!)... and I setoff midday for Stoke to meet up with Teen, Caz and
Spanky the monkey. From there we drove to Wrexham. Teen parked in a disabled carpark
right infront of the police station window with her illegal number plates which
we thought was funny. We got there and just missed the soundcheck. We did a brief
walk around, saw Lance and started queuing about 3 or 4. I was freeeeeeezing.
We started taking pics of Spanky with Pudsey bear but Spanky wasn't behaving too
well. He started licking Pudsey's balls and such like... the queue found it funny
but Spanky just showed us up really. There were some funny security guards though...
we were just standing around minding our own business and this 'do-gooder' came
up to us and said "BBC only!"... Caz said it's a shame cos she works
for ITV lolol. Chris Ashby and Gill and friends arrived with us in the queue later
on. We were surrounded by 'Soggy Soggy Soggy' (Wet Wet Wet lol) and 'Nadia' fans. Anyway
around 6pm the gates opened... I ran infront of everyone and was at the barrier
first... I went straight to centre stage and got my spot. Teen, Caz, Spanky, Chris
all followed. Then followed the worst orderdeal I have ever been through before
a BA concert. 2 hours of utter shite. We had made rude banners but security wouldn't
let us put any up because it was live TV and children in need... ahh well! It
was funny when 'Nadia' came on though because the security guard was making fun
of her tits lol. We were spared though because she didn't sing her new song. Haven't
heard it but I don't want to! Nadia was quite scary actually, don't wanna go through
that again! I have never seen Teen and Caz laugh so hard when it was announced
that Lisa Scott Lee was 'going to push Pudsey's big red plunger' to to turn on
the Christmas lights! Was sooo funny! Christian Lionteau was quite good though...
I was quite disapointed with 'Wet Wet Wet'... I wanted to swipe that smile off
Marti Pellow's face he doesn't half love himself. Also...Lisa Stansfield... how
bad was she!!! Wow. She looked like the grim reaper as well wtf! All for a good
cause though eh!
Eventually
Bryan and the boys came onstage... they instantly put all the other acts to shame.
It made me realise how good they are live even more compared to other bands. Bryan
still hadn't cut his hair... looks as if he is trying to grow it to me, also Keith's
head looked like a little onion with his tuft lol... like it the 'Room Service'
booklet photo. 'Open Road' was really good and Bryan chucked his harmonica into
the crowd again like at Brighton... went straight over my head though! Surprisingly
afterwards they played 'Room Service'... love that song. '18' followed and then
'Summer Of '69' electric again... just like in Cardiff a couple of weeks ago!
Think it was only because they couldn't be bothered to change guitars around and
alter the setup because they were on for such a short time. At future BA shows
I think he will continue performing it acoustically but we will see. I guess Wales
is just lucky! 'The Only Thing' got everyone singing along and for me was the
best song of the night. At one point I thought the speakers were gonna blow because
they just couldn't take the noise that was goin thru em! They held out pretty
good though. They took their bows anyway and left the stage. I did think that
was it, but they came back on and did 'Run To You' which was nice to see. At the
end of the show Bryan mentioned the Cardiff gig he did a couple of weeks ago and
said he loved Wales. He also said he had never been to North Wales before but
he hoped to come back soon. After the gig we waited
for Bryan but eventually it turned out he left straight away with the band. Tina
wanted us all to go anyway because she was cold and needed the toilet lol. So
we said goodbye to everyone and went to Tesco for some food! On the way back Tina
and Caz drove us through such villages as 'Cock Bank'... Teen said she wanted
to go and make a withdrawal... sweet christ! If you like gigging smut free...
never go with these 2! Great Friday night out though we had a great laugh and
it was free for a change :) 18 times seeing Bryan in under a year in USA, UK,
Switzerland, Italy and Germany... think thats it for me til next year now! Setlist: Open
