04/11/05 - SPORTS ARENA, SAN DIEGO, CA

Review by Alicja:
I guess I’ll start by saying that we never planned on going to this gig. Teresa and I had only planned to go to the Santa Barbara show and being able to go to San Diego show was a nice, unexpected turn. Instead of going to California after work and arriving Friday night (the night of the San Diego gig) as planned, we managed to get the morning off and flew out early that day. So what were we going to????? What else but drive down to San Diego from LA to see if we can make the show :) So, not even knowing if there were any tickets available we headed down the California freeway . The excitement started to build when we passed a tour bus that looked exactly like the silver ones BA and DL use, and when I thought I saw someone who looked like Mickey in the passenger seat. Who else could have been heading down that direction to San Diego :) Whether it was them or not, it sure got us all hyped up!
After a two hour drive, we arrived in San Diego, grabbed some dinner and headed for the venue box office. Tickets were still available, very limited, scattered floor seats in the back and them some to the side of the stage on the first level. Whatever we would get, we were happy that we would make it to two shows after all. We held out buying tickets till about 15 minutes before show time to see if any better seats would open up (just in case, as was our experience in the past) but we couldn’t wait any longer as we noticed many walk-ups to the window buying tickets last minute. So we decided we better buy the best available tickets and we wound up on the first level, side of the stage, luckily for us it was Keith’s side :) Lately, we have been very fortunate watching Bryan and the guys up close, so watching them from afar wasn’t going to hurt, heck, we were happy that we were able to be there at all! :)

We had an absolute awesome view of the entire arena and stage and it was fascinating observing both for a change...lol. Bryan came on and started with Room Service, of course we were on our feet. The crowd was sitting through the first few songs until Back To You when Bryan said: “c’mon San Diego, get up off of your asses”. What a sight that was, everyone sitting and then the ENTIRE floor section stands up and from then it was a PARTYYYYYYY!!!
Noticed also, that aside from the audience enjoying the show, one of the guitarists from Def Leppard was really enjoying the show too! Ricky Savage along with his wife I’m guessing, stood on the side of the stage area for probably 3/4 of the show and I caught him singing several times too :))) They just stood there on the sidelines, holding each other. I found that to be really sweet.
The set list was the same as it has been last month and the highlight of the show was WYG when fellow baddie Colleen got chosen. We knew you girls were across from us on the other side of the arena and sure enough when the time came for Bryan to pick someone, the most enthusiasm came from that side. Colleen was the most enthusiastic so it’s no surprise he picked you :) We knew it was your birthday too, so we couldn’t be happier for ya! She was fantastic, a real pro, and even thought the crowd was booing when you said you were from NJ they seemed to change their minds when you said you were a masseuse :) Tried to get some pictures but they came out blurry cause of the distance as did all the other pics :( The sound though was really much better from up there than being right up against the speakers...lol.
All too quickly the show ended :( These 80 minute sets are just too short for me which is one of the reasons why I keep coming back for more and more and more and more :)))
One thing is certain though and that I know will never change, from the first time I saw Bryan in ‘92 in the nosebleed section to the last time I saw him last month at Mohegan Sun from the first row and now in San Diego, no matter where you are, Bryan has the ability and magic power to mesmerize and enthrall and cast you under his spell! Of course when Bryan casts that spell, we baddies always prefer the be in the first row, right? :)
