21/07/06 - KEDLESTON HALL, DERBY

Review by Steven Stanley:
I wasn't going to do this show... but seeing as it was only 30mins away from my house and Bryan did 'Only The Strong Survive' randomly the night before... I thought it might be worth checking out... and boy was it!

I didn't bother queuing because at these summer shows you can get a pretty decent spot anyway and just enjoy the thing so I went late and met up with Nat and Chelsey who did the same thing. The place was really beautiful.... with a river running right by the stage and a bridge behind it... then up on the hill behind the crowd was a big mansion. The whole day was really sunny and warm as well.

They came on at 8.30 with 'So Far So Good' and went through the usual classics... after '69 he did 'I Think About You' with all the band. Didn't sound half as good as on the 18 Tour but it was still cool to hear. After 'Everything I Do' though was when my jaw dropped... a drum beat started which was unusual so I started filming... then Bryan played a few dirty chords... I knew what it was instantly...."HE's NEVER DOING LOWLIFE!"... he did as well. Complete with crowd participation and Keith solo... apparently Lizy requested it the day before so well played Lizy!

A group of people were watching for free over the riverbank and Bryan kept saying stuff to them etc. At one point he said "first one to swim the river and get over here gets a backstage pass"... one guy jumped in and the whole crowd started cheering him as he swam the huge river! Bryan was laughing his ass off and when the guy took his shirt off and jumped in he said "good lad!!!".... after a couple of minutes he was across and got dragged onstage!!!... he was a big lad and had weeds hanging from his belly and stuff! His name was Rich and he was from Derby! Bryan sent him backstage to get a t-shirt off Toe and stuff. Was soooo funny!

'It's Only Love' was great because Keith's solo was legendary... he was playing the solo behind his head and used tons of pedal effects that I've never seen him do before. 'Hearts' great as always with the boys sliding on their knees and rockin' it to the max. 'Cloud #9' is now done without the '#9, #9, #9, #9, #9, #9' etc ala the Chicane mix... 'Run To You' was great... but then again it always is! The band took a bow and Rich who swam the river with his big belly joined in again!

Bryan mentioned how beautiful the venue was... and it really was. It looked breathtaking during the 'Please Forgive Me' cell-phone moment. BA attempted Gnarl's Barkleys 'Crazy' but couldnt remember the words... was still cool though! He said he might it tommorrow (Northampton).... great show anyway and full of surprises and funny stuff we weren't expecting. Also... gotta love the chicken drummers and chips back at Nat's... mmmmm :)

Bryan and the legend that swam the river! - Rich from Derby!

Mickey & Jody watching the support act 'Raemonn' (who weren't half bad!)

10 years ago to the week BA was touring the UK including venues like Wembley Stadium... now a tartan rug and a box of 'Scrabble' coupled with a Gazebo at a picnic fest was the way to go. Beautiful venue though.

The bloody box office!
