Review by Franziska:
Hi everyone, I just got back from the gig and am enjoying myself in the hostel now. What follows now is my review, and I hope that other people can add missing pieces as I was quite excited to be there and very busy enjoying myself.

Since it wasn't sure whether we had to queue to get front row I had planned to take the train at 6 a.m. to Hamburg. Deutsche Bahn was on strike so I ended up taking a train one hour later. Naturally, my reserved chair was gone and I had to stand from Heidelberg to Hamburg, a total of 4 1/2 hours. Time just wouldn't pass.

In Hamburg I checked into my very cheap hostel and then made my way down Reeperbahn - for anyone who doesn't know it, it's the red light and amusement district - to the theatre. The lady there was quite annoyed by me asking about Bryan Adams so I hung around for a bit.

Luckily, Jim, who was so kind as to invite me as one of his 11 guests showed up with some other fans. Since tickets would be with numbered seats we decided to go for lunch to the pier and ended up at the Hamburg dungeon, stuffing ourselves between skulls and skeletons.

Around 5:30 p.m. everyone returned to the St. Pauli Theatre where some well known peeps had gathered and tried to annoy the securities, who had no clue whatsoever on the proceedings of the evening. Tickets were finally ready for pick up at the counter and then we had to get back out into the cold for another hour. Entering was no big deal, as everyone had their numbered seat waiting for them.

(Above) Jim (an absolute legend!) stands up and attempts to get the crowd going!

Jim, trying to get the audience off their seats, was doing a lot of cheering and got told off by the securities for making 'too much noise'. We just couldn't believe it. Anyways, Bryan came on stage a couple of minutes after 8 p.m. took his accoustic guitar and launched straight into 'Tonight we'll have the stars'. He then welcomed everyone and said that he had noticed a couple of faces and that he'd especially like to welcome Jim, as Jim and him go way back and Jim was even around for the unplugged concert. He even mentioned that they had to edit Jim out of some of it because he was too loud.

There was also a girl who gave him a harmonica before the gig and he announce that he was going to play the next song on it. The next song was 'Back to you' and people were still glued to their seats. Next he said that he was thinking about playing a new song that he hadn't played so far on this tour but that he was probably going to fuck that one up properly. He then launched 'I thought I'd seen everything', kind of got it wrong, grinned, paused and then said 'see, already did it' and started to play the whole song again. 'Run to you' was up next.'When the night comes' was proposed as well as 'Lonely Nights' and 'Have you ever' but he decided to play 'Heaven' and it was quite beautiful. The guitar was a bit out of tune and he made fun about it and had the tech bring a new one which was out of tune as well.

Something was also wrong with his mic, because it kept making popping noises which he commented with 'is someone having popcorn here tonight? I'd like to have some too.' He then played 'Summer of 69' which had the whole theatre on its feet.Next was 'Something to believe in', a first on this tour. Next was 'Oxygen' followed by 'Walk on by', 'Please forgive me' and 'Cuts like a knife'. Last, on special request he played 'the only thing that looks good on me' and then vanished from the stage. It was an awesome concert, short but sweet. Thank you Jim for being my host for the night.
