19/07/08 - VERIZON WIRELESS AMPHITHEATRE, CHARLOTTE, NC

Review by Steven Stanley:
Show 2 of 4 on the 18 roadtrip takes us to Charlotte, North Carolina. The trip from Portsmouth was fun, as you will see in the 'America 2008' film. We got to the venue 10 minutes before the car park opened but were told we couldn't go in (which was causing traffic problems)... so we just followed Darren around to the staff entrance and drove straight in! A massive tailgate party ensued with beer, bbq's, footy and the like with the Americans... thats the way to gig.

We went into the gig with some of our new friends and had a great time. It has to be said the temperature was absolutely intense... the hottest gig I've been to since the Isle Of Wight '03. We thought Foreigner would be headlining tonight but it was Bryan again... apparantly the first 2 shows were alternate nights then they were doing 2 off and 2 on until Texas. Since Jack and I missed the start of Foreigner the night before we made a point of wanting to see the whole show here because they were so good in Portsmouth.

Kelly Hansen and co came storming onstage and they we're brilliant, Kelly once again running right up to the grass banking 100 yards from the stage during 'Cold As Ice', really really good. Foreigner were better than Bryan in Portsmouth, and to be honest I really didn't see how Bryan could beat Foreigners show tonight.

It was however a special show tonight, and although the setlist was maybe the worst I've ever seen (even one song less than Portsmouth) the crowd and vibe made up for it during the rock songs... which Bryan fed off and it made for a good show. It was actually a pretty damn big venue here in Charlotte... summer crowd, beer flowing... '69 and 'Run To You' never sounded so good. We were surrounded by random Americans who remembered all the 80's stuff and we all created a mosh pit atmosphere with bounces to '69, 'Run To You' and 'The Only Thing'... it was pretty good. I can only imagine what the atmosphere would have been like if it was a standing show. Tonights show was Bryan's, and as the sun went down with an amazing North Carolina sunset I couldn't help but think how lucky I was to be there.
