25/10/08 - TRENT FM ARENA, NOTTINGHAM

Bryan kicks off the UK in style with a belter of a setlist. A first live performance of 'The Way Of The World' plus a cover of the tune Dave Edmunds made famous that hasn't been done since the early 90's...'I Hear You Knocking'.

Review by Moya Stinson:
Maria flew into Manchester on Friday 24th October and we were late picking her up. We got stuck in traffic and Maria had to wait for about 30 minutes before we arrived. I was very worried in case she thought we had forgotten her, but all was well in the end.

After a good night’s sleep we set off for Nottingham around 10.30 on Saturday morning. We had a good drive and arrived in Nottingham around 11.30. Unfortunately my route map was totally inadequate and we were so lost for around 30 minutes driving backwards and forwards along the one way system. After asking at a hotel, we finally managed to find our apartment where we going to stay. Luckily for us the car park for the apartments was at the backstage entrance to the arena and so we knew were to go after the concert!!!!!

We joined the queue at 12 noon and were about number 41. We were told that the numbers had stopped at 40!!! So we just waited and hoped that we would get a reasonable place at the barrier. We always seem to get the same place which is in front of Keith which we are quite happy with. The day went reasonably quickly and the weather was kind. We were lucky enough to make friends with the people around us and managed to have a few breaks which made the wait very pleasant. At around 1pm the security people came to put up the barriers which we thought was an excellent idea and hoped that this would stop any people pushing in. However, we did see some try, but this didn’t happen.

The doors were opened at 6.30 and it was not too bad at all getting through the doors. It was a pleasant surprise to find that once in the arena, we only had a few yards to walk to the stage and took our places at usual spot. The supporting band, Black Daniel came on stage at 7.20 and we thought they were ok, but we were really excited waiting for Bryan to come on stage. Neither me nor Maria had seen Bryan for over a year and we just couldn’t wait.

Bryan walked on to the B stage at around 8.25 and rocked the house immediately with CANT STOP THIS THING WE STARTED. It is always interesting to see how people react when they can listen to him but can’t see him on the main stage. Bryan was alone and played acoustic which was very different from any openings I had been to for a long time. The standing area was ecstatic and Bryan stopped to dance with a woman who obviously was very happy. I looked around to the seating area and thought maybe they were all asleep and hoped it would get better. Bryan went on with PLEASE FORGIVE ME but nearly at the end of the song he stopped singing. Obviously he didn’t know the words anymore. After “You got it” the band members had appeared on stage and Bryan went to the stage while singing THE BEST OF ME. He got the usual hugs, danced and gave high 5s. Also Maria and I got to clap his hand twice. That was excellent!!

Bryan joined the band and played SOMEBODY which got the crowd going even more, but again, I looked to the side at the seating area and was totally disappointed because not many people were out of their seats. I know that this can cause problems in the seating area, but how they manage to stay sat down, I don’t know!!! It was great to hear the next number, HEARTS ON FIRE which certainly, for me, was a real blast from the past. It was just great. 18 TIL I DIE followed

Review by Maria Heutz:
Once during the concert Bryan talked about having been in Nottingham before and that he has got an award for “Everything I do!. This was because it was the song for “Robin Hood”. He said the award was a plaque with an arrow in it, but the arrow had fallen off and he had to stick it with blue tack. He though that maybe they had given him the award to sell more
fish & chips….. but then he stopped because he didn’t want to tell us his private stuff. He then asked us what we wanted him to play “an old” or “an new” song. Nearly the full audience shouted at him some voted for “old” some for new and others for both. I think he couldn’t understand what the majority was going for. So he decided to play an old one.
Nearly at the beginning he said that there are many song requests and that he will pack in as many songs as possible. (We thought, maybe, he would sing “When the Night Comes” Moya’s favourite and one that we have requested many times. We held up a banner in Cologne, but didn’t get the request!!

WAY OF THE WORLD was a big surprise for me. We’ve got this one only as a b-side on the “I thought I’d seen everything” single, but in England it was a bonus track on the 11 album.
Bryan chose Charlene to sing along to When you’re gone. She was from Leicester and a good singer. When she came on stage he started to sing the first few lines of If you wanna be good you gotta be bad. I remember so well his concerts in the end of the 90s shows when the Blues Jam was performed. I loved that song then very much because Bryan always sang parts of the song with a woman’s voice…

My most favorite song of the night was TAKE ME BACK. I love that song live so much. It has such a lot of energy.

During IT’S ONLY LOVE Keith was swinging his guitar around his neck and when he wanted to play it again he had turned up the guitar back to front so there were no strings to play on. This made Bryan and Keith laugh – us too!!!

A complete surprise happened when Bryan played I HEAR YOU KNOCKING. I never heard Bryan playing this cover song before and it was great.

RUN TO YOU was in the normal setlist not in the encores. Bryan and his band played only CLOUD # 9 together and at the beginning Bryan was totally out of tune but he managed it to sing it right. He’s such a professional.

In my opinion this was a very good concert. It will get 9 points out of 10 from me. The reason for one point minus is the faults Bryan did. He is only a human and humans make faults. For me the mixture of the songs could have been better. He often changed from a rock song to a ballad and this brought the pace down. (Moya: I actually enjoyed this mix!)

After the show we went to the backstage area and waited for Bryan and the band to come out. I was surprised to see some Audis with German car signs on them. The first one left with Jody. Later we saw Keith and he came to the fence were obviously many of his fans waited. One woman asked him to take a photo through a hole in the fence which was funny because Keith had to stoop behind the fence and this woman was in front of it. I would like to see this “stupid” photo. A bit later Keith asked one of the security guys to open the fence and nearly everybody who had waited went and gave Keith a hug. Moya asked him to sign her ticket and he did.

Someone told us that Bryan had already gone via a secret door. So there were no more reasons to wait any longer and we went to our apartment. What a great night and we will do it all again on Wednesday in Sheffield.

Moya: I desperately hoped that Bryan would sing “When the Night Comes”. The last time I heard him singing this was at Sheffield about 10 years ago. It absolutely brought the house down. Still there was Sheffield to look forward too!!

By the way, thanks for not mentioning the kettle Maria!!?????
