05/05/09 - CMT CROSSROADS, JAMISON HALL, THE FACTORY, FRANKLIN, TN

Review by 'Todays's Country' Magazine:
CMT Crossroads, the show that has brought together the likes of Taylor Swift and Def Leppard, Miranda Lambert and Jack Ingram, etc… have brought together a pairing of new country and rock-n-roll from north of the border for their next episode. Jason Aldean, who just released his brand new album Wide Open that features his hit single “She’s Country” teamed up with Canadian rocker Bryan Adams, whose catalog includes hits like “Summer of 69,” “Everything I Do (I Do It For You),” and “Cuts Like A Knife,” to tape the next installment of the show, scheduled to air on Friday June 26, 2009, in front of a packed house inside Jamison Hall at The Factory in Franklin, TN.

With the crowd already warmed up as the preliminary round of clapping and cheering prior to the cameras rolling was completed, Crossroads producer Bill Flanagan was brought to the stage.

“We have seen a lot of shows,” he stated, “but when Bryan Adams and Jason Aldean started rehearsing for this one everyone at CMT started to text message each other saying you have to get down here and see this,” he paused as the crowd cheered in anticipation before continuing, “These guys know exactly what they are doing and love music, this is pairing made in heaven and they are in the room so let’s welcome them to the stage,” he finished as Aldean and Adams emerged from stage left and walked out to a standing ovation.

Bryan approached the microphone and instantly showcased his fun and sarcastic side to the crowd stating, “I want to clarify before we start. We really have no idea what we’re doing.” The crowd along with Aldean and his band mates laughed, as the final tuning on their guitars was complete and Aldean continued, “So y’all came here to hear some music tonight right,” he asked as the crowd cheered with a deafening applause.

Bryan began, “this one is one of Jason’s and it is a pretty song,” prompting Aldean to continue, “Ya know Bryan that guitar your playing is from a friend of yours isn’t it?”

“This guitar comes from Johnny Cash,” explained Bryan, “So that’s where we’ll start then,” finished Aldean as they kicked into his smash hit “Johnny Cash.”

As the song came to a close Aldean talked a bit about doing this Crossroads. “We had been talking with CMT for the past couple years about doing one of these shows, but for me, it wasn’t about just doing the show, it was more about doing it with someone that I admired and looked up to.” Adams quickly chimed in, “Wow. I hope you find somebody,” causing the crowd to laugh at his witty comeback.

“This next song is a sweet little song and there is a great misperception about it being about a time period, but it’s not,” started Adams “It is about looking back on nostalgia,” he finished as the first notes of “Summer of 69” began and brought the crowd to their feet instantly and saw Jason taking over the majority of the leads on the popular song.

“Wow, the last time that I sang harmony on that one was when I recorded it” stated Adams as they prepped for the next song. He continued, “So with this next song I had to ask Jason why he called it “Why,” and he said…” prompting Jason to chime in with the typical guy answer of, “Cause,” as they launched into the popular Aldean cut.

The crowd level of appreciation for what they were witnessing was at a high as they seemed to consistently get louder as each songs final notes were hit prompting Aldean to say, “Y’all are great. I am used to my crowds being drunk,” which caused a louder applause and made both Jason and Bryan laugh as Aldean told his story about sneaking Jack Daniels into a movie theatre in his boot when he was younger so when he’d order a coke he could have a Jack and Coke. Adams just looked at him and shook his head smiling as they launched into “Back To You,” a song off of Adams MTV Unplugged album.

They rolled through the song and kept the crowd dancing and clapping along with them as they dove forward into the set with Aldean’s current number one smash song, “She’s Country,” which allowed Adams to bring his guitar playing skills to the forefront as he shredded the guitar perfectly throughout the performance of the tune.

Aldean explained, “Bryan has written a lot of great songs and ballads of my generation and I am pretty sure that some of you guys and girls out there made out with this next song,” as they launched into “Heaven” and quickly had the mostly late 20’s/early 30’s crowd on their feet singing along with them.

As the crowd cheered with a standing ovation Aldean continued to shower Adams with praise, “We only have an hour here which isn’t enough times to play all of Bryan’s hits. I mean “Everything I Do” was a 16 week number one song,” he paused as the crowd applauded the accomplishment much to Bryan’s delight, “Heck I am lucky if one of my songs stays on the charts for 16 weeks, period!” finished Aldean as they launched into one of his hits, “Amarillo Sky.”

“I always thought this would make a great country song,” explained Adams, “This is one that I wrote with Mutt Lange that appeared on my 18 Til I Die album” he finished as they launched into “The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You.”

Aldean began, “I’m going to tell a story about this next song if that’s cool cause I’ve done some studying on you,” he asked of Adams as Adams shook his head yes signaling that it was cool. He continued, “You had a couple of hits, but this next one is the one that put you on the map really. It’s from your third album, which at that point in your career was your biggest one….” Adams interrupted, “You’re not going to talk about people making out in the back of a car again are you?” The crowd laughed as Aldean rolled right along with Adams comment, “Well I am sure that I did to some of your stuff but probably not this one, but it is my favorite song of yours because when I first came to town me and Tully, our bass player back there, we went to a karaoke bar here and he sang this song…” Aldean paused as Tully grinned and turned a nice shade of red. “It was not his finest moment as a musician….” Adams then stepped back up to his microphone and embarrassed Tully a bit more when he said, “I’ll tell ya what. I wouldn’t mind seeing that right here, right now,” stated Adams to an enthusiastic crowd forcing Tully to the microphone to do the first verse of “Cuts Like A Knife,” before Adams and Aldean closed out the show with it and had everyone once again on their feet singing along with them, “Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na………”
